Private Homeowner Issues
LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL POLICY

CPR works to support the individual rights of home ownership. Home ownership can be an important key to individual economic independence. Local, state and federal public policy should be crafted in a manner which promotes and encourages property ownership and supports a variety of market-based options for citizens of every economic level. (Please note, that we specifically did not use the term subsidizes home ownership.)

CPR supports individual homeowners who may be facing impacts to their individual rights. We hope to serve as a resource for any individual property owner who is facing what they believe to be an encroachment of their basic property rights.

CPR assists homeowners facing issues or disputes with local government and state agencies by providing information, referrals to attorneys and other professionals who may assist these owners if standing up for their rights, or in some cases simply encouraging the understanding that current laws permit the encroachment of their rights.

Every week it seems some municipality is seeking to increase its power over individual land uses, including impacts on the freedom of individual homeowners.

Citizens should be keenly aware that their homes are no longer their "castles" in the minds of many government officials and staff members.

CPR is witnessing an increased willingness among those in government to encroach across property lines and to bring regulations "inside" private homes and businesses. Due to the current political support for "eco-friendly" public policies, we are beginning to see new local, state and federal mandates that - if not countered - will regulate property down to what plants or landscaping can and cannot be installed in private residential yards or outside businesses, what lighting fixtures can be used, and even what paint color can be applied to homes and businesses. Nothing seems too small or too petty for officials to attempt to regulate.

This encroachment on the basic freedom of individual citizens to choose where and how they live, for purposes that in no way directly impact the public's health or safety, is wrong no matter how meritorious their public purpose rationale may be.

Property owners should be aware that we are witnessing right now what may be viewed later in history as the zenith of the green or environmental movement - where large national and international organizations are spending hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying lawmakers to regulate private property. Citizens must understand that some of these organizations are not benevolent foundations and may in fact be disguising a different political agenda in green wrapping paper.

From a property rights perspective, there are two very different types of environmental activists. The first type strongly supports freedom, voluntary conservation actions and private property rights. The second type sees no harm in converting all private property to public property through acquisition and regulation.

The end goal of communism is the complete elimination of private property. If private property ownership rights are diminished and eliminated, no matter what the motivation or rationale or what you call the supporters of the movement to erode property rights, the bottom line is that property rights will no longer exist. When property rights are gone, freedom no longer exists because citizens no longer have the economic freedom and independence made possible through property ownership.

CPR strongly supports the right of every owner to control their private property, whether it is an individual residence or private business.

If you are as concerned as we are about the erosion of property rights, please take a moment and join CPR today!
