It is far more effective to state that you are extremely angry and why - than to simply type paragraphs of angry language or insults in ALL UPPER CASE LETTERS. 2) If referencing a topic or agenda item - include the subject of your letter as a separate subject line or in bold in your opening line. If the agenda item is being heard on a given date - be sure to include the date in the subject line. This assists commissioners and their staff in making sure your communications are reviewed with materials they are reviewing relative to this item. 3) Limit your message to 1 to 3 key points. 4) If you wish to provide additional information or documentation, include a 1 page cover letter which summarizes the key data or facts. 5) The most effective communications are ones sent. It is better for citizens to send a half page or 1 page email or letter that states your key points and arrives in a timely fashion - than a 4-5 page novel that may never be sent. It is extremely important for citizens to recognize that public policy decisions are often a "numbers game", and that the decisions of elected officials are frequently influenced by the citizens who take the time to communicate - and their collective number. If you aren't communicating with your elected officials regarding your values and interests, it is very likely that other citizens or other special interest groups are communicating - and influencing the decision-making of your elected officials. Your rights and freedoms are well worth writing to protect!
